Editing plays an important role when it comes to a thriller. Quick cuts and short shots edited in make it much more scary and tense as it covers many different angles but also makes it hard to see complete detail (which is good when it comes to a trailer). However, in a thriller trailer, it can also be effective to give a way a lot of the storyline without giving away the ending etc. (Non-Stop https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jiHDJ19A3dk, starts with long shots about the story then switches to short shots).
Sound is also very important and plays a very big part. A classic background track for a thriller; like how it's edited, starts slow to go with the shots and then gets much faster paced. (When A Stranger Calls https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIgkbigAzjY, music gradually gets more intense). Diegetic sound is also important as it gives a more realistic approach to the film.(The Ring, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TuH5FaUpFm4, good use of diegetic sound; phone ringing, video play, screaming etc).
